Prince Harry Is Stepping Down as a Royal to "Protect His Family"

The duke's close friend revealed, "The number one rule is to be a father and to be a husband."

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are making some major changes in 2020. Fresh from their six-week vacation in North America, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they plan to step down as "senior" royals, but will continue to support the queen and the Commonwealth.

And now, Prince Harry's friend JJ Chalmers, with whom he served in the army, has opened up about the royal's announcement. Speaking on BBC's The One Show on January 10 (via Us Weekly), Chalmers revealed, "He’s less the captain in the army I knew, and he’s more a father, that’s the first thing I ask him about."

Chalmers continued, "And I think the decision that he has made, at the forefront of that is to protect his family, because the number one rule is to be a father and to be a husband."

Tom Bradby, who made documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, confirmed that Harry is acting in the best interests of his new family. Bradby wrote in The Sunday Times, "It is pretty clear to me from conversations with both sides that this exit could suit everyone, at least in terms of narrow self-interest. But there is no doubt Harry and Meghan feel they have been driven out."
